One, Fassbinder's theatrical experience shaped his conception of what "good acting" was, and he carried it over to cinema (realism didn't interest him energy and attitude did), and he was just as much of a self-driving workaholic under the proscenium as he was on film sets: he wrote 14 plays, adapted six classic plays by other playwrights, and directed or co-directed 25 more plays by other writers. This is a marvelous conceit, true to the spirit of early Fassbinder in a couple of ways. Even locations that would seem to cry out for grand cinematic treatment (including nightclub exteriors, alleyways, major thoroughfares, and indoor banquet halls there's even a rain scene) are presented as stripped-down stage tableaux, seemingly with the expectation that viewers will use their imagination to fill in what's not there, as they would if they were attending a play in a 40-seat underground theater in Munich. Characters often storm on- and offstage from the wings. There is no audience save for the viewer. In a bar scene, for example, the stools, the bar itself, and important objects are three-dimensional props, but the liquors and glasses and mirror behind the bar are painted. Actors inhabit key moments in Fassbinder's life on stage sets with minimal props. And it's so crucial to making "Enfant Terrible" work that this problem-might as well go ahead and call it a failing-undoes whatever magic that the film can work.īuilt around a bulldozer of a lead performance by Oliver Masucci-who carries on with rough-trade swagger, portraying Fassbinder as a demonic bully who gets into people's heads-the entire story is presented as if it were an early Fassbinder experiment, half-in and half-out of the late-1960s black box theater scene. Röhler's "Enfant Terrible" never gets a handle on that aspect of Fassbinder, that essential question. How can a single, feature-length motion picture capture such a titanic personality, with this many contradictions? And most of all, how can it walk that knife-edge, showing us why people believed in Fassbinder and wanted to give him money, work with him, and sleep with him, even as he smashed and burned his way through the international film scene, leaving ruin in his path? Fassbinder was also known to be dictatorial, abusive, chaotic, self-dramatizing, unreliable, and a lot of other unflattering adjectives: the kind of "difficult genius" who seemed as if he was worth the grief during and immediately after production, but whose cruelties scarred his collaborators. His formally precise yet often expressionistic approach influenced many filmmakers, including Paul Verhoeven ("Soldier of Orange" and "Spetters" seem to have an especially strong Fassbinderian streak), Martin Scorsese (" Mean Streets" and " Taxi Driver" in particular for a while, Scorsese employed Fassbinder's regular cinematographer, Michael Ballhaus) and Bob Fosse (whose affinity for Federico Fellini and Stanley Kubrick is well-documented, but in retrospect had a lot of Fassbinder in him). His films were intensely sexual, openly emotional, and psychologically as well as physically violent, often dealing with the authoritarian impulse in private lives as well as societies.

This person can act as your hero’s shoulder to lean on, their sounding board, and sometimes as their moral conscience. Jack and Rose from The Titanic would fall under this category, falling in love, and casting off the conventions of society despite their disparate backgrounds. They’re also liable to look the other way when challenges arise because that’s what rose-colored glasses tend to do. They are intensely emotional and seek connections that complete the person they are. They love people and want to be sociable and in touch with everyone around them. The Lover can play several roles in your story, and here you’ll see how they aren’t necessarily romantic roles. (I think we could all use a little of what they’re drinking.) They follow their bliss and want everyone else to do the same. Lovers often have a zest for life and revel in the very notion of being human and alive. They strive to make other people feel loved and secure and take pleasure in meeting the needs of others. They’re all about creating relationships and evoking devotion in the audience. They’re the character that brings emotion and feeling to your stories. Simply put, the Lover seeks passion regardless of where that focus lies. It’s more about an essence rather than the need to actually fall in love. That functionality was possible on VMware, but I also never investigated how to use it. Upon boot, my desktop was immediately synced from macOS over to Windows. With Parallels Desktop, I barely could tell I was running another OS. I’ve got a pretty fast Mac (3.1 I7 with 16 GB of RAM), and there were times that it was slow under VMware. The first thing I noticed was how fast everything felt inside of Parallels Desktop. Initial ImpressionsĪs I mentioned, I’ve been using VMware Fusion since the early days (version 2), so I have become accustomed to all of its strengths and weaknesses. Even if you aren’t an IT person, Parallels Desktop walks you through each step with clear prompts. Overall, the installation process was a breeze. You can download a trial version of Windows, install Ubuntu, or pick from a multitude of other options as well. If you don’t have an existing image, it’s certainly easy to get set up with a new OS as well. Once it was done, I booted right into Windows 10. It took under five minutes for my 44 GB image. I opened the Vmware Fusion image in Parallels Desktop 14, and it went through the conversion process. The only thing that would have made the entire process easier is if it had offered to delete everything VMware related from my laptop after the fact. I was hoping that Parallels Desktop would be able to use this copy, and I wasn’t disappointed. Since I was an existing VMware Fusion user (I upgrade yearly), I already had a copy Windows 10 installed. SSD drive is recommended for better performance.Additional disk space for virtual machines (varies on OS and applications installed, e.g., at least 16 GB is required for Windows 10).600 MB of disk space on the boot volume (Macintosh HD) for Parallels Desktop application installation.Minimum 4 GB of memory-8 GB is recommended.A Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, Core i9, Intel Core M, or Xeon processor.I say all of this to say – there are countless reasons why you might want to virtualize Linux, Windows, or macOS on your Mac. On a much slower PC, AutoCAD was far better. She used to own a 27″ iMac with 32 GB of ram with a 1 TB Fusion Drive, and AutoCAD would consistently crash on it. My sister-in-law designs commercial landscapes for a living, and while she loves a Mac, she prefers the PC version of AutoCAD. I have some legacy applications that require me to access them in Internet Explorer Classic, but others might be required to use the PC versions of Office or another Windows-specific app. If you prefer using macOS but have times where you need to access Windows or Linux only programs, you can do with ease using virtualization technology (the technical term behind what Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion are doing. You don’t have to shut down your computer to reboot into another operating system, but rather simply launch the program and another operating system boots up. On macOS, you can use one of these apps to open a copy of Windows, Linux, or even additional versions of macOS (for testing). When I read about Parallels Desktop 14, I decided that it was time to try something new.īefore we get started, let’s talk about why you’d need an app like Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion. I had certainly heard of Parallels Desktop before, but I jumped on the Fusion train and kept on upgrading over the years. One thing to note (and I think it makes gives my review an interesting perspective) is that I’ve used VMware Fusion (and supported it at my day job) since 2009. I’ve been spending some time with it since then, so I wanted to take the time to write about it in more detail. I wrote about the release of Parallels Desktop 14 a few weeks ago. |
